Ever wondered why your pain keeps coming back? You think you have it under control and sorted and then it’s back again. Well, it could be as simple as you are only addressing the symptoms such as the pain and stiffness not the cause of your issue.
Our body follows a sequence of alternating patterns of stability and mobility. If one of these sections is not ‘doing their job’ the other areas of the body need to compensate creating an increased risk of injury if they are pushed beyond their ability.
As an example, knee pain such as ‘patellofemoral pain syndrome’ also known as ‘runners’ knee’ could simply have occurred due to reduced movement or control at the hip or the ankle. With the knee normally providing ‘stability’ and both the hip and ankle providing ‘mobility’, if the mobility is lacking at either of these two areas there is a greater requirement of the knee to do the same movement. If pushed too far injury occurs.
The Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) is one way to look at your overall function and drill down to investigate and treat the cause of those annoying problems that keep re-appearing. Through the SFMA physiotherapists focus on movement dysfunction which may be the actual cause of the pain, not the symptom of the pain itself. This screening provides a good insight into the body’s movement patterns to identify individualised problems that may not have been picked up otherwise. SFMA is available at our Armidale Practice.
Thanks and have a great day, Carmela
