Do you find yourself doing less and sitting more as the cold weather sets in?
With winter approaching, the days become colder and shorter, and we often find ourselves doing less and sitting more. This time last year we were in the midst of COVID isolation and lockdown so many of us found it difficult to be active. The result of inactivity over those months last year resulted in a big increase in the number of people falling and admitted to hospital. The reason is simple – doing less and sitting more reduces muscle strength often more evident in the older population. Strong and flexible muscles are critical to support joints in particular the knee, hip, and shoulder joints. If unprotected, joints are at risk of injury and people are at a higher risk of falling and becoming injured.
So as the colder weather sets in and you find yourself inclined to stay indoors, reconsider, put on a warm coat and gloves, and set out on a brisk walk. You will feel so much better for it!
